Follow-up: 60 lights handed out at Tweedy Park to curb crime

Due to continued burglaries and thefts at the Tweedy Park Old Age Home, now targeting recently donated solar flood lights, residents received an additional donation of floodlights.

After recent burglaries at the Tweedy Park Old Age Home, several security companies donated and installed solar floodlights around the premises to protect the elderly residents.

Unfortunately, crime has continued after the installation of these lights, with the lights becoming a target.

To ensure residents are not vulnerable in the dark, additional lights initially donated by security companies were recently handed out by Freedom Front PR Clr Riaan van Zyl and his team.

Sixty lights were distributed to residents of the cottages, and these will be mounted on the front of their homes.

Previously, the lights were mounted on light poles, walls, and other high spots, with the idea that they would be difficult to reach.

This was proven false, because thieves climbed the light poles and broke the lights off the brackets.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini explained vandalism and provision of security in most of their facilities remains a great challenge.

“We will continue to engage the EMPD as the custodian of law enforcement to prioritise and assist on this matter,” he said.

With regards to maintenance of the premises, Dlamini stated the concerns raised are noted and the city regrets this inconvenience.

“Grass-cutting at Tweedy Park will resume as soon as the weather permits and further measures are being put in place to ensure maintenance and sustainability of the facility,” he added.
