Mall safety tips for this festive season

Mall@Carnival centre manager shares safety tips for your holiday shopping sprees.

As festive shopping and gift purchasing is at the front door, the Mall@Carnival shared safe shopping tips for shoppers to avoid being targets of criminal activity this December holiday.

Stay alert
“Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions like texting or wearing both earbuds. Keep valuables secure and don’t flash cash, phones, or jewellery. Keep handbags zipped and close to your body,” said centre manager, Erna Vermaak.

Watch your belongings
“Never leave shopping bags, wallets or phones unattended, even for a few seconds. Avoid carrying large sums of cash and use cards or mobile payments where possible,” she continues.

Report suspicious behaviour
“Inform mall security immediately if you see anything unusual,” said Vermaak.

Keep your children safe
“Keep young children close by holding their hand or wearing a safety wrist strap. Tell them to approach mall security or a store employee first if you are separated,” she explained.

Further tips
“Use the ATM’s inside the mall, preferably during busy hours. Be discreet when entering your pin by shielding the keypad from view.

“Don’t overload yourself with bags, it makes you an easier target and makes it harder to react quickly,” concluded Vermaak.
