Court hands down suspended sentence in child abuse case

The woman avoided direct imprisonment after receiving a five-year suspended sentence for child abuse.

The Brakpan Regional Court sentenced a 34-year-old woman after she was convicted of child abuse following an incident involving her 12-year-old stepchild.

The woman from the Mgongo Five informal settlement, Brakpan, was arrested on April 24, 2024, on charges of child abuse or ill-treatment.

She barred the child from going to school and forced the child into a bin of cold water a day before her arrest.

She pleaded guilty to the charge of child abuse on January 29 and was sentenced on the same day.

The woman received a sentence of five years’ imprisonment, which was suspended for five years, provided that she is not convicted of child abuse or assault on a child.
