Multi-agency operation targets illegal mining hotspot in Brakpan North

Law enforcement and private sector partners joined forces in Brakpan North under the leadership of Colonel Robert Makopo to combat the growing threat of illegal mining to community safety.

Brakpan SAPS Vispol commander Colonel Robert Makopo led a multi-stakeholder operation targeting illegal mining activities in Brakpan North on February 25, resulting in arrests and the confiscation of mining equipment.

The team comprised the SAPS District Infrastructure Unit, Brakpan SAPS Vispol members, Quarto Security mining division members, and Gold One Mine members.

“The activity is part of the SAPS’ strategy to combat a resurgence of illegal mining in Brakpan, which poses a threat to our community’s security, economy, and environment,” said Constable Audrey Buthelezi, Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer.

“The operations of this caliber are collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders to tackle illegal mining activities within the jurisdiction, and they will continue until illegal mining is permanently eradicated.”

During the operation, two men were arrested and found to be illegal immigrants. Confiscated items include spades, picks, hammers, water pipes, bathtubs, and a small-sized penduka.

Makopo thanked all stakeholders involved and cited that the operations will be regulated, and their success depends on teamwork between the stakeholders.
