Brakpan sees overall crime dip despite some surges
Total serious crimes in Brakpan dropped, with notable decreases in property crimes and sexual offences, though certain violent crimes have risen.
The third quarter crime statistics were recently released, reflecting crimes reported to SAPS from October to December 2025. The figures for Brakpan showed that while violent crimes like assaults, carjackings, and trio crimes rose slightly, property crimes and overall serious offences declined.
The local police station featured on the Gauteng provincial top 30 list in the following categories:
• Burglary at non-residential premises: position 15.
• Carjacking: position 30.
• Crimen injuria: position eight (despite a decrease from 36 cases the previous year to 24).
• Robbery at non-residential premises: position 20.
• Sexual assault: position nine.
The full stats for Brakpan are as follows and are compared to the same time period as the previous year:
Contact crimes (crimes against a person)
• Murder remained the same at six cases.
• Sexual offences decreased from 24 to 19.
• Attempted murder increased from five to seven.
• Assault GBH increased from 29 to 31.
• Common assault increased from 64 to 69.
• Common robbery decreased from 11 to 13.
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 79 to 82.
Total contact crimes increased from 218 to 227.

Sexual offences
• Rape decreased from 18 cases the previous year to 10.
• Sexual assault increased from five to eight.
• Attempted sexual offences increased from no cases to one.
• Contact sexual offences decreased from one to none.

• Carjacking increased from 18 cases the previous year to 27.
• Robbery at residential premises decreased from 10 to seven.
• Robbery at non-residential premises remained the same at 13 cases.
• Trio crime increased from 41 to 47.
• Robbery of cash-in-transit vehicle remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Truck hijacking decreased from nine to two.
Contact-related crimes
• Arson remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Malicious damage to property decreased from 43 to 39.
Total contact-related crimes decreased from 43 to 39.

Property-related crimes
• Burglary at non-residential premises decreased from 40 cases the previous year to 29.
• Burglary at residential premises increased from 50 to 53.
• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle decreased from 51 to 32.
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle remained the same at 30 cases.
• Stock theft decreased from one case to none.
Total property-related crimes decreased from 172 to 144.
Other serious crimes
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased from 190 cases the previous year to 119.
• Commercial crime increased from 115 to 117.
• Shoplifting increased from 27 to 35.
Total other serious crimes decreased from 332 to 271.
Total 17 community reported serious crimes decreased from 765 to 681.
Crime detected as a result of police action
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased from six cases the previous year to 18.
• Drug-related crime increased from 110 to 120.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs remained the same at 65 cases.
• Sexual offences detected as a result of police increased from no cases to one.
Total crime detected as a result of police action increased from 181 to 204.
• Kidnapping increased from 25 cases the previous year to 26.
