Jeep Club SA and Offroad Legends event fuels support for animal rescue efforts

Participants in the Fun with Friends 2.0 off-road event supported Sunny’s Pet Outreach Team with donations of food, blankets and essential supplies.

Members of Jeep Club SA and Offroad Legends combined adventure with compassion on March 8, during their Fun with Friends 2.0 off-road event, which supported Brakpan-based animal welfare organisation SPOT – Sunny’s Pet Outreach Team.

Participants travelled from Brakpan to Heidelberg, exploring scenic back roads and off-road areas while collecting donations of pet food, blankets and other essential items for animals in need leading up the event.

According to Sanette Bosman, director of SPOT, the generous donation will make a meaningful difference in the organisation’s ongoing work assisting vulnerable animals in the community.

“We are deeply grateful to Jeep Club SA and Offroad Legends for their compassion, kindness and support. Their willingness to use their event to help animals in need truly reflects the strength of community spirit,” said Bosman.

The support came during an emotional weekend for SPOT members.

The prior afternoon, a mother dog they had been feeding and monitoring near the former Plastic City informal settlement was struck and killed by a vehicle.

The dog had recently given birth and had hidden her puppies somewhere within a large, dense bush area stretching nearly a kilometre, filled with narrow pathways, fallen tree trunks and thick vegetation.

SPOT volunteers removed the dog’s body and immediately began efforts to locate the puppies. Shortly after 06:00 on March 8, several Jeep Club members joined SPOT volunteers to search the area before the start of the event.

After the donation handover, a smaller team of SPOT volunteers continued an intensive search for several hours, but the puppies could not be located. Appeals for assistance using a thermal drone unfortunately went unanswered.

Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, Bosman said the generosity shown by the off-road community has provided renewed encouragement.

“Even in difficult moments, support like this reminds us that there are many people who care deeply about the wellbeing of animals,” she said.

SPOT continues its work promoting responsible pet ownership through education, initiatives and feeding programmes for vulnerable animals in the community.
