Brakpan weekend crime round-up: Hijackers strike in Brenthurst, driver dumped in Springs

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from April 3 to 5.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – The driver of a gold-coloured Toyota Prius was robbed of the vehicle by three hijackers in Brenthurst at around 21:00.

The victim, who was travelling with a friend, stopped along Scott Crescent to relieve himself. While out of the vehicle, he was approached by three men wearing balaclavas, who pointed firearms at him.

They instructed him to get into the vehicle.

The victim was forced into the car while his friend was left at the scene. The hijackers drove around with him for some time before dropping him off in Springs, and driving off in his vehicle.

The victim sought help from security officers at a nearby business, who assisted him in contacting police.

Cases of hijacking and kidnapping are under investigation.

Saturday – Two hijackers robbed the driver of a white Nissan Livina along Muir Avenue at about 20:35. The driver was accompanied by a friend, whom he was dropping off at his residence.

As he parked at the gate, two men approached the vehicle, both carrying firearms. One went to the driver’s window while the other went to the passenger side, and pointed firearms at the pair, instructing them to get out of the vehicle.

After the driver and his friend got out, the hijackers got into the vehicle and drove away. They fled towards Station Road, and the driver and his friend chased after them on foot.

The pair then came across a man who offered them a lift to pursue the hijacked vehicle. They followed it until it reached an informal settlement, where the man said he was uncomfortable entering.

He then drove them to the police station to report the incident. A hijacking case was opened.

  • A 9kg gas bottle, cash and clothes were stolen during a break-in at a home along George Street in Anzac.

Sunday – A man was assaulted and robbed near the corner of Station Road and Kitzinger Avenue. The victim and his friend were crossing the railway line at about 21:00 when they noticed they were being followed by two men.

One of the men following them then took out an Okapi knife. The victim ran, but tripped and fell. Two men caught up with him, held him down, and were then joined by the man with the knife.

They assaulted him, searched him, and took his cellphone. The robbers also demanded money and took his packet of cigarettes before fleeing towards Goods Road.
