Brakpan police are on a mission to create schools where every learner will walk through the gates each morning feeling safe, respected, and supported; schools where teachers can focus on teaching, learners can focus on learning, and parents can rest assured that their children are protected.

The SAPS Safer Schools Campaign programmes focus on ending learning environments where fear, violence and crime cast a shadow over every lesson.

“Safety at schools is not only important, it is urgent,” said Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“There is a need for regular structured engagements between local schools and the SAPS.”

Buthelezi engages with local schools on a regular basis because SAPS believes that safety at schools is a foundation of quality learning.

“Without safety, there can be no learning, and without collaboration, there will be no lasting solution,” she said.

Buthelezi explained that regular engagements with local schools are crucial for early intervention and prevention as this will allow the SAPS to identify risks before they become crises.

“Early detection of bullying, drug activity, or gang influence through consistent communication can save lives and futures,” she said.

“Learners change perception when they see police officers as regular friendly faces and not only in moments of crisis.

“Trust is built over time through presence, listening, and shared problem solving.”

SAPS brings law enforcement expertise, and schools bring insight into learner behaviour and community dynamics.

“Collaboratively, we can design safety programmes that are relevant, culturally sensitive and effective,” continued Buthelezi.

“Regular school talks by SAPS members equip learners with knowledge about their rights, responsibilities and how to seek help.

“The teachers gain confidence in handling safety concerns, knowing they have SAPS as a committed partner.”

Local police engage with schools in the area through school talks, school searches, parents’ meetings, and joint safety campaigns.

“Some people may be worried that regular police presence could intimidate learners, but SAPS ensures that engagements are done with empathy, respect, and a focus on education,” said Buthelezi.

“This becomes a source of reassurance rather than fear. SAPS’ goal is not to police the learners, but to protect and empower them.”

Brakpan SAPS urges community members to take responsibility for safety at schools because it is not the responsibility of one group, it is a shared duty.

“Through regular meaningful engagements, SAPS and community members can create learning environments where safety is the norm and not the exception,” added Buthelezi.

“Not through occasional meetings, but through ongoing partnerships, open communication, and a shared determination to protect our children’s right to learn in peace.”
