• Provide a brief description of your career history.

I started my career in 1999 at the Springs Muslim School in Bakerton, teaching mathematics, natural science and technology for Grades Four to 10.

In 2000 I worked at the Pioneer Primary School in Actonville. I specialised in teaching mathematics, natural science, technology and physical education for Grades Four to Seven.

I was appointed as an HOD at the Brakpan Primary School in 2006. I worked my way up the ladder to deputy principal and was eventually appointed as the principal in November 2015.

While at Brakpan Primary I have taught mathematics, technology and natural science for Grades Four to Seven.

• What inspired you to become a school principal?

Having taught at various schools, I worked closely with the principals. It was their confidence and inspiration that created a desire in me to one day head a school of my own. Without their belief and mentorship, I would not have been developed holistically to take on the role as principal.

• How would your learners describe you?

From the various letters that I have received from learners, one letter reflects the general notion kids have about me.

“Mr Samsoodeen is good and he is strict. That’s why I like him. He keeps our school safe and clean. Mr Samsoodeen made great changes in our school uniform and our parents really like it. We are lucky to have a principal just like him. Thank you, Mr Samsoodeen, for giving us sports fields, netball courts and playgrounds. You have made our school a better place. You are funny, have a big heart and care for us and people. We love you.”

• When you were in school, what subject provided the best learning experience for you?

It was definitely biology. I was intrigued with how systems and processes worked in plants and animals. Learning difficult scientific names of things was fun.

• What do you like most about your job?

Knowing that I am directly involved in making a positive contribution in shaping the lives of children and people I work with.

• Is there any advice you would give to a person who is starting out in your chosen career?

Always give your best. Never be afraid to ask if you do not understand anything.

Grab every positive opportunity to learn, even if it is not part of your job description.

Surround yourself with people who have a positive outlook on life.

Work smart, not hard and finally: “If anything is worth doing, do it well.”

• What do you see on the horizon for your line of work?

I would first like to improve results so that our children become lifelong learners, being developed holistically; and to provide every opportunity possible for learners to excel in life, whether academically or culturally.

I would also like to form networks with the immediate community of Brakpan Primary.

• Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

Hobbies would include anything artistically related and interests would include general handyman work.

• Who or what inspires you?

My parents and my wife are my greatest inspiration in life. They have supported me unconditionally throughout my journey towards becoming a principal. To them I am eternally indebted.

• What do you feel you have bragging rights to?

I pride myself on maintaining a transparent leadership style, not forgetting that we are one of the biggest primary schools in Brakpan and on taking the school from strength to strength by uniting educators and all stakeholders.

• What is your favourite thing about Brakpan?

It is the peaceful surroundings and easy access to shopping centres and highways.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
