Franaconda aims to squeeze out Gloss
Social media exploded with excitement and debate when the EFC Africa 29 featherweight fight between Francois “Franaconda” Groenewald and Leo “King” Gloss was announced.
The fight will take place on May 1, at Carnival City, and the Brakpan-based Xtreme Kickboxing Technologies (XKT) Pro League fighter, Groenewald, is ready for battle.
According to Groenewald, the announcement of the fight came as a bit of a surprise, as it was called at short notice.
“I am fortunate that I have been training hard and helping JP Kruger for the last few weeks, when he was training for his title fight against Garreth McLellan,” he said.
He added that he has had some “issues” with his opponent in the past and is really looking forward to meeting him in the cage.
Franaconda told the Brakpan Herald that the aspects of his fighting style that he has been working on include improving his stand-up work and spending a lot of time on his wrestling.
“I managed to take down seasoned wrestler Pierre Botha and win via submission at EFC Africa 27, so I am confident in my ability,” he said.
When asked what he knows about his opponent, Groenwald said: “He is mainly a boxer with lighting hands and is a threat when standing up.
“He hasn’t done much work on the ground, so I will definitely be working hard to get him down on the ground.”
Groenewald encouraged fight fans to get down to Carnival City on May 1, and to support the local fighters.
“This fight has got a lot of hype and I am really looking forward to it,” he said.
He added that he has signed for another fight in the cage, in July, but cannot yet who his opponent is.
