Horses for healing

Every Thursday, a team from Labyrinth Stables, based in Benoni, makes their way to the school to help the pupils, by means of the power of horse riding.

Owner of Labyrinth Stables Desiree Miller first made contact with the school at the beginning of 2013, and they immediately jumped on board, realising how equine therapy could benefit their pupils.

Robert Zeni, from Labyrinth Stables, himself an avid rider, summed it up perfectly when he said: “There ain’t nothing that the horse can’t fix.

“Not only do the children change, but their parents do too.”

Three of the school’s pupils have, since February, been taking part in South African National Equestrian Schools Association (SANESA) shows, where they have achieved a number of places.

“We are extremely chuffed with them and are thrilled with their remarkable progress,” Zeni said.

“There are many people, not just children, who can benefit from equine therapy and we hope that we can bring it to as many people as possible.”

Elsabé Briel, physiotherapist at Muriel Brand, said that parents have reported back that their children are showing an improved and better emotional state and more confidence in themselves.

Funding is, as usual, a major hurdle, and Zeni is appealing to anybody who would like to get on board with the project to contact him on 083 265 7806, or Miller on 083 325 2431.
