Brakpan get through with 14 men
A score line of 43-0 tells the story of a walk in the park for Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV, when they hopped on the bus to play Klerksdorp for the first time in many years, on Saturday, July 18.
The North West club, who joined the Valke Peregrine League this year, welcomed the undefeated “Panne” to Klerksdorp for a match that was not as easy as the score suggests, since their opponents certainly provided some strong resistance.
Brakpan did, however, control the match with 14 men after skipper Francois “Bones” Robbertse was shown a red card before the break.
At half time the Panne had only a 7-0 lead over their opponents, who battled hard to keep the Bosman Stadium-based side from running rampage.
Fetcher Wikus van der Berg stole a number of balls on the ground to get the turnovers for his team.
Brakpan, however, came out strong in the second 40 minutes and threw waves of attack at the Klerksdorp defensive structures who had been so good up to this point.
The team would run in five tries in the second stanza to make the score line look much more impressive.
The speedy winger, Leon “Sweef” Potgieter, scored his customary weekly try in the final minute of the clash to maintain an incredible try-scoring record this season.
Tobie Botha, Dirk Odendaal, Dwane Morrison, Jaco Lotter and Thinus Ueckermann also scored five-pointers.
Brakpan appear to be unstoppable in their charge towards the Valke Peregrine League title and subsequent qualification for next year’s Cell C Community Cup, the elite community club rugby tournament.
