Lifters prove their power at competition
Powerlifting is a form of competitive weightlifting in which contestants attempt three types of lift in a set sequence using weighted Olympic barbells - the lifts being squat, then bench press and finally deadlift.
Locker’s Muscle Factory Gym, situated at 87 Hamilton Avenue, held its second powerlifting competition of the year and is on target to compete at national level in June and September.
On April 6, in the men’s division, Bryce Hadden notched up his second consecutive competition win while the first competition for females was won by Nastelle Boshoff.
The 19-year-old male powerlifter Hadden rose to the occasion against some seasoned competitors based on the Wilks Formula which introduces a handicap system to facilitate competitors of different weight divisions to compete on a level playing field.
Hadden topped the standings due to the Wilks Formula with a hefty total of 324.4 points at a body weight of 57.4kg and lifts totalling 365kg in total.
He also won the deadlift event with a notable near triple body weight deadlift of 155kg for a Wilks score of 137.78.

In second again was Tristan Kichenbrand (who also placed second at the last competition) with a Wilks total of 313.70 at a body weight of 65.1kg.
Kichenbrand won the squat event with a solid 135kg lift which was more than double his body weight and clocked a Wilks score of 107.21.
Third place went to Raman Zahrayuk who narrowly beat Eugene Heine for third place by 0.29 Wilks points with a total of 310.96 and sum total lifts of 450kg at a bodyweight of 78.5kg.
The biggest lift of the day was by Mark Fulton, the club captain, in deadlift with a whopping 220kg. Fulton also won the bench press event on the Wilks Formula topping 83.94 points and pushing 140kg at a body weight of 104.
