Brakpan pulls off victory
Brakpan has a bye this weekend and their next match is away at Vereeniging on June 22.
The 39-24 score line might suggest that Brakpan Rugby Club’s first team were comfortable in their match against Correctional Services at the Bosman Stadium, on Saturday. The match, however, was a lot closer than what the scoreboard tells us.
The visitors were in the match in the first half and even made Brakpan pay for mistakes. From early on it became clear that Correctional Services were going to kick for poles whenever they were awarded a penalty in a position to kick from to keep the scoreboard ticking.

They used the tactic to punish Brakpan for any mistakes they made regarding their discipline.
This saw the visitors leading 16-13 at half-time after both sides had scored a try a piece in the first half. Juan Pachonick dotted down for the local side with PJ Beukes kicking over the conversion and a penalty.
Things got worse for Brakpan early in the second half when Correctional Services scored their second try to take an eight-point lead.
The situation looked bad for the hosts until they clicked into life in the last 20 minutes.

A line-out move saw winger Divan Brooderyk get over for his side’s second try.
Although Correctional Services kicked a penalty over after that, there was no stopping Brakpan as they put on a spirited performance in the last 20 minutes of the match.
Phillip Barwise then scored the first of his two tries after a well-worked back-line move in the corner.
Then captain Reg Muller got over as he scored to help his side edge further ahead.

When the visitors were in attack in the last play of the match, Barwise intercepted a pass and ran the length of the field to score his second of the match.
There were other victories for Brakpan’s sides on the day with the second team putting the visitors to the sword winning 64-12.
The third team lost 5-17 in Brakpan’s only loss on the day.
Earlier the u-21 side hammered East Rand United 50-15 as they continued the excellent form that they have been in this season.
