Local runners impress at Comrades

Three Brakpan runners earned themselves the Bill Rowan (for finishing in under nine hours) at Sunday’s Comrades Marathon.

Former Hoërskool Stoffberg pupil Adel Thomaz (8:22) and Carnival Runners’ Eric Mbuyisa (8:12) and Xolane Bavuma (8:52) all impressed in one of the world’s most popular ultra marathons.

Adél Thomaz (left) finished the Comrades Marathon in 8:22 and managed her Bill Rowan medal while René van den Worm finished in 9:56 and earned the newly intoduced Robert Mtshali medal and Hybré Geldenhuys finished with a Vic Clapham Medal in a time of 11:23.

Thomaz, whose maiden name is van den Worm, was the fastest between her sisters who are all former Hoërskool Stoffberg learners. René van den Worm (9:56) received the newly introduced Robert Mtshali medal for finishing the race between nine and 10 hours. The other sister Hybre Geldenhuys ran in a time of 11:23 for the Vic Clapham medal.

Mbuyisa and Bavuma were not Carnival’s only runners. Sam Mokgotho (10:06) and Lucky Seopela (10:56) finished with bronze medals.

Stuurman Mnqobani (11:24), Sandile Makeleni (11:39), Muzi Fakude (11:43) and Marsha Davids (11:44), all came home with their Vic Clapham medals.

“I knew I would make it (before the 12-hour mark) so I slowed down to help a novice runner who was struggling,” said Davids who has just completed her ninth Comrades.

Davids is already looking forward to next year’s race where she is looking forward to earning her green number.

“I’m going to rest for a month and then start training again,” she said.
