Kickboxers flock to Brakpan
Massive kickboxing tournament held in Brakpan.
One of the largest kickboxing tournaments on the African continent, Great North 2, was held at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre, on Saturday, August 23.
The action-packed tournament, hosted by Brakpan-based Xtreme Kickboxing Technologies (XKT), is sanctioned by the South African Amateur Kickboxing Association (SAAKA) and serves as a vital warm-up for some of the fighters who are gearing up for the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) Cadets and Junior World Championships in Italy in early September.
About 700 fights took place on the day in 140 divisions, in various styles, ranging from semi-contact and light-contact, to full-contact, K1 and forms.
Raymond “The Whip” Phillips, president of XKT and a champion kickboxer himself, said the event was a great success and, although it was a busy affair, everything went smoothly.
“We welcomed fighters from all over South Africa to Brakpan,” he said.
“This tournament allows fighters to gain valuable experience ahead of other major tournaments and to demonstrate their skill levels beforehand.”
He thanked all the fighters and instructors who participated on the day.
