More traffic policing needed at schools

Johan Botha writes by email: I see in the Herald all the proud arrests the EMPD makes for speeding along major routes in the area.

Sadly, I think that this is only for financial gain and not for safety reasons.

Yes, I know that this matter has been brought up a lot of times, but, believe me, safety is not the priority on these roads or to the Metro Police.

The roads that need their help and are of great importance to our future, are the roads around our schools.

These roads have motorists travelling into oncoming traffic, down one-ways, stopping on the wrong side of the road, speeding, not yielding at pedestrian crossings and not waiting for pedestrians to cross the road.

They drive without regard for the young children and others using these roads to get to school.

This happens on a daily basis, at all the schools in our town.

Heaven forbid that a parent should educate a motorist for driving recklessly — he is now in the wrong by taking the law into his own hands.

Clearly, the Metro Police will not do it.

What happens if a child is run over? The parent will be blamed.

Is it possible for the Metro Police to do the job they get paid for, to keep the roads pedestrians and motoristS use on a daily basis safe?

Or are the main roads more lucrative for you and your staff?

I guess time will tell.
