WATCH: High tea helps San Michele raise funds for vital water project
Community support grows as the home works to secure a safe and reliable water supply for residents.
San Michele Home hosted a high tea at the Brakpan Garden and Pet Centre on April 18 to raise funds for a water purification plant.
The MC for the day was Danny Painter, a Jacaranda FM radio personality and Brakpan resident.
San Michele uses 70 kilolitres of water daily for cooking, sanitation, drinking, cleaning, and an estimated half ton of laundry.
Due to the unreliability of the municipal water supply, a borehole was installed a few years ago and provides an excellent supply.
However, the water is not suitable for human consumption, making a purification plant essential to ensure a safe, reliable potable water supply.
The plant has been quoted at R400 000. To date, the home has raised half of this amount, but additional funding is still required to complete the project.
Towards the end of 2025, the home experienced repeated water crises. A storage tank holding excess supply burst, resulting in the loss of over 500 kilolitres of water, while municipal water pressure also dropped significantly.
During the event, a breakfast voucher worth R500 from Blu Bam Boo in Johannesburg was auctioned.
Pastor Basil Panayi placed a generous winning bid of R2 000 for the voucher.
Guests were entertained by San Michele residents, who performed choreographed dances to selected songs.
