Brakpan SAPS and partners champion mental health awareness

Community members welcomed informative one-on-one engagements focused on autism and mental wellness.

Community members at the Kingsway Clinic in Brakpan received vital information on autism, early intervention and mental health support during an awareness campaign held by local police and other stakeholders.

Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi, CPF sector 1 chairperson Simon Mabuse, and representatives from the Brakpan Youth Crime Prevention Desk, Department of Social Development, and the clinic joined hands for the awareness drive on May 11.

“The awareness was aimed at educating the public about autism and mental health, reducing stigma, promoting early intervention, and fostering supportive communities that enhance individual and societal well-being,” said Buthelezi.

Social worker Thulisile Malatji explained autism to parents and highlighted how they can identify early signs of the condition in young children.

“She further encouraged parents to seek more knowledge and understanding of autism so that they can raise their children with autism in the correct way and enroll them in relevant schools,” said Buthelezi.

The community members at the clinic were reminded of the importance of mental health.

Buthelezi added it was emphasised that recognising that mental health conditions are real, common, and treatable, and be willing to talk about them openly without shame, or judgment is a sign of awareness which goes beyond basic acknowledgement and encompasses mental health literacy.

Buthelezi and other stakeholders engaged one-on-one with clinic visitors, offering assistance tailored to their individual concerns and needs.

Community members were appreciative of the stakeholders’ interactions and thankful for the informative engagement.
