Gunmen open fire on fleeing couple during suspected hijacking attempt

Police are investigating after a woman was shot during an attempted hijacking near the Mgongo informal settlement.

A woman was shot during an attempted hijacking on Location Road near Brakpan North in the early hours of May 31.

According to police information, the driver of a black Ford Fiesta and his fiancée were travelling near the Mgongo informal settlement at about 02:00 when they were forced to stop because two vehicles, a white Toyota Hilux and a white Toyota H100, were parked parallel to each other on the road.

The driver stopped a few metres from the vehicles.

An elderly man then approached them on foot from the direction of the parked vehicles. Another vehicle then pulled up behind the Fiesta.

Two men got out of this vehicle. One approached the driver’s side and pointed a firearm at the driver, while the other approached the passenger side and pointed a firearm at the driver’s fiancée.

The men ordered the driver to get out of the vehicle, but he drove off. The couple then heard a gunshot, and the driver’s fiancée told him she had been shot.

He immediately took her to the Far East Rand Hospital. Cases of attempted hijacking and attempted murder are under investigation by Brakpan SAPS.
