Carletonville woman empowers young women through Becoming Her initiative
Ntsako Kawe is using her leadership experience and passion for community development to equip young women with confidence, knowledge and opportunities through her Becoming Her organisation.
An enthusiastic woman from Carletonville wants to help others through her organisation as well as a special event in October.
Ntsako Kawe is a big-hearted leader who attended Laerskool Danie Theron and Hoërskool Carletonville before completing a Politics and International Relations degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. She is a born-again Christian, community builder, content creator and businesswoman who is passionate about empowering women to become the fullest version of themselves.
Kawe is also a committee support officer, contributing to efforts that strengthen local governance and create meaningful community impact, and a proud mom to a baby boy, Oboikanyo.
“My leadership journey began at university, where I served as Academic Officer and Fundraising Officer in student politics, before being elected Convener of Elections in 2022, which further developed my leadership, organisational and advocacy skills. On the community side, I partnered with the United Nations Girl Up programme in 2021 to address period poverty, and co-founded WOMXN to WOMXN in 2020, a community fostering sisterhood, upliftment and support among women,” says Kawe.
She also creates authentic content around motherhood, marriage, personal growth, fashion and purpose, and have partnered with brands including Plush and Raja Spices.
“Outside of work, I enjoy restaurant hopping, shopping, reading, and attending church with my husband,” adds Kawe.
She founded an initiative called Becoming Her to equip young women with the knowledge, confidence and opportunities they need to thrive in every sphere of life through education, mentorship and meaningful conversations.
“Our belief is simple: every woman has the potential to become everything God called her to be,” says Kawe. The organisation runs eight annual programmes covering the full journey of a young woman’s life.
The annual Becoming Her seminar focuses on practical life skills, leadership, career guidance, financial literacy and health education, while the Tertiary Application Assistance Programme helps matriculants apply to university or college and includes one application fee. There is also the Tertiary Mentorship Programme, which offers mentorship, accountability and emotional support to students busy with their tertiary studies.
Meanwhile, the organisation also organises the Young Makoti Circle, which is a sisterhood for young wives navigating marriage; a women’s high tea, which is a space for honest conversations and connection; a baby clothes donation drive for struggling mothers and families; a back-to-school drive to help underprivileged children with school shoes and supplies; and a pads and toiletries drive to support dignity and menstrual health.
This year’s Becoming Her Seminar will take place at His Grace Worship Centre, opposite Khutsong South Ext 5 Library and Vintage Carwash on October 10. This year’s theme centres on building a financially secure future, Mapula Mohale, a Wits graduate with a Master’s in Building, specialising in Project Management in Construction, qualified Project Manager and Urban Planner, and co-founder of YSTEM, a non-profit empowering young people in STEM careers, will be the MC.
Other speakers are Katlego Marumule, a content creator and influencer who is a final-year Public Management student at the University of Pretoria who is passionate about inspiring, educating and creating authentic connections through faith, education and purpose; Exar Mhlongo, a public policy professional at the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), who is passionate about how good governance and policy transform communities; Boitshepo Ramontsho, a third-year trainee accountant on her journey to PA (SA) who is also a content creator focused on personal finance and financial literacy, speaking on budgeting, saving and healthy money habits; and Mpho Gazi, a Psychology Honours graduate, wellness advocate and Christian vlogger who is focused on holistic well-being.
