Archives awareness event puts spotlight on history

Everyone must be aware of their own history.

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the National Archives and Records Services held an Archives Week event in the Molatlhegi Community Hall in Kokosi on 9 May.

The above organisations celebrated Archives Week from 6 to 10 May under the theme: “30 Years of Democracy and State of Record Keeping in State Institutions: Archives of the Future.”

The Department’s spokesperson, Nomazwe Ntlokwana, explained that the outreach aimed to educate the community on archival services and managing historical records. They also encouraged residents to remember and cherish their history. Representatives of the national and provincial archives and even the SABC attended the event and were available to educate and answer questions.

“Archives Awareness Week promotes the work of the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa and all the Gauteng provincial repositories. It also serves as a platform for records managers from government institutions, municipalities and private sector archives to share knowledge about proper record-keeping practices and related legislation,” says Ntlokwana.

The International Council on Archives (ICA) observes National Archives Week annually to highlight preserving information in societal memory, promote good record-keeping practices and increase access to archival facilities, functions, and services.
