Reckless driving case after 20 injured

The driver of the minibus was trapped in his vehicle.

The Carletonville police are investigating a reckless and negligent driving case after an accident where over ten schoolchildren were injured.

The accident occurred on the P111 on Thursday, 16 May.

The driver of a Nissan UD Quon truck belonging to a company in Nelspruit was driving towards Carletonville around 06:20 when he noticed smoke coming from his trailer. He stopped to check what was happening and realised his right rear tyre was starting to burn.

As a precautionary measure, he stopped on the road surface to avoid setting the veld alight.

He used a fire extinguisher to stop the fire and released the trailer from the horse to alert oncoming road users of the fire.

At about 07:10 that morning, a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi collided with the rear left tyre of the truck. Ambulances transported 19 learners to numerous hospitals.

Emergency service workers used the “jaws of life” to free the trapped driver from the taxi wreck.
