Merafong launches Local AIDS Council to strengthen community response to HIV

The launch featured candle lighting in remembrance of lives lost to HIV/AIDS, along with performances and community engagement.

The launch of the Local Aids Council took place on November 18 at the Carletonville Civic Centre. The purpose of the event was to present the HIV/Aids monthly performance report for November, as conducted in Merafong City Local Municipality for the financial year.

The Local Aids Council is a community-based body that brings together people living with HIV, Health workers, NGO’s, and local government to tackle HIV/Aids at the grassroots level. There was also a presentation of the overview of SANAC and Aids Council mandate, objectives, and functions presented by Mr Tshifuwa.

SANAC is the national co-ordinating authority with a broad, multi-sectoral mandate as it brings together government, civil society, the private sector, and people living with HIV, TB, and STIs to steer the country’s response to the epidemics.

The objective was to foster dialogue among stakeholders and oversee the implementation of the national strategic plan. SANAC’s role is to co-ordinate, guide, and fund the national effort against HIV, TB, and STIs, ensuring that all sectors work together towards the vision of a healthier South Africa.

The Civil Society Leaders were endorsed, and the launch was a success as the beneficiaries of the programme were the community members, local leaders, civil society organisations, activists, and advocates.

There was also candle lighting during the launch in remembrance of all the people who have lost their lives due to HIV/Aids in the Merafong community, and there was also entertainment from local actors, and food was served.
