Wedela police use soccer to raise awareness against gender-based violence

The Wedela SAPS teamed up with local organisations for a unique 16 Days of Activism campaign, using a soccer tournament to spread awareness about abuse prevention.

The police in Wedela held their 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children in a different way this year.

This police station’s social crime prevention officer, Sergeant Zikhona Sifuba, says that police officers, community safety officers, Gauteng Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), the Department of Correctional Services, the police’s Victim Friendly Room, and Bambisandla Sam took part in a special event that reached 315 people.

“We did it a different way this time around. We played soccer, where the message of gender-based violence was passed on to the members who were playing, as well as the spectators,” says Sifuba.

SAPS, Kusasalethu Masters, and Happy Strikers were the teams competing on the field, while various officials, which included crime prevention and domestic violence coordinators from police stations around the Westrand SAPS district, watched and handed out pamphlets to members of the public.

The Wedela Station Commander, Captain Wayne Pestana, was also present to watch and support the campaign.

He thanked everyone present and the police members who participated in the campaign.

SAPS and Kusasalethu Masters proceeded to the final, where Kusasalethu Masters won 3-2.
