Newly repaired Welverdiend main road already cracking

Cracks have appeared on the newly resurfaced Station Street just weeks after completion, prompting engineers to investigate whether the asphalt can withstand the area's heavy traffic.

Although residents of Welverdiend were recently overjoyed that the main road through this town was being fixed, their happiness turned to disappointment when they saw that this new road had already started to crack.

A resident only known as Zack complained on July 6 that there were already two cracks in the road across from Foodzone.

“How do they build a road that already cracks only three weeks after it was finished?” he wondered.
When the Herald went to check later that day, two observant residents, Michael Maboluane and Elias Motingwe, pointed out that there were several other cracks as well.

The biggest crack is in the section of the road next to the filling station, while the road is also cracked next to one of the houses in Station Street.

The Herald spoke to Rex Majawa, who was until recently the site manager at the project.

Majawa confirmed that they were aware of the cracks.

“We brought back the engineers as the asphalt is not good enough for the heavy traffic that this road has to carry,” Majawa says.

He also indicated that, although the cracks will certainly be fixed, it is not certain what will be done to stop similar problems from developing elsewhere in the new road.
