League of Laggies brings weekly stand-up comedy nights to Carletonville

Carletonville audiences were treated to an evening of laughter on January 29 as local comedians performed at Detox Café’s “League of Laggies” event.

An exciting comedy show took place on Thursday, January 29, at the Carletonville CBD’s Detox Café, where a wide range of local comedians took to the stage and had the audience laughing the night away.

Detox Café has become the hub to be on Thursday nights, offering a different entertainment vibe to wrap up one’s week.

“League of Laggies” is a one-of-a-kind live showcasing platform that celebrates the city’s comedic talent and brings people from all walks of life in Merafong together to share in the joy of laughter. Since laughter heals all ills, the “LOL Stand-Up Comedy Event” has kicked off and will take place weekly throughout the month of February.

The event will feature seasoned comics such as Ke Boike, Jabu.B, Sabatha Kgang, Phaks Phethu, and more, who are ready to keep audiences cracking up while laying the foundation for developing a local stand-up comedy culture.

“As there are many entertainment destinations offering music and dance in town, for years there has been no platform to cater for live comedy. Comedians feel neglected as professional artists and entertainers, even though there is a market for alternative, relaxed, nonchalant, yet mature forms of live entertainment,” expressed the manager of Detox Café, Mr Sakhile Mthembu.

Spreading “LOL” is their aim in 2026, as local comedians are eager and committed to entertaining with their funniest stories and jokes. They hope to establish their individual brands and build a progressive comic culture that will attract audiences from far and wide.
