Smithathlons athletes from Carletonville qualify for D2 Championships in Krugersdorp

Several athletes from the Smithathlons club in Carletonville are set to compete at the D2 Championships in Krugersdorp after outstanding performances, including long-standing 100m and 200m records being broken by rising young stars.

Several members of the Smithathlons athletics club from Carletonville are heading for the D2 championships.

Coach Annetjie Smit confirmed that the D2 Championship for primary and high school athletes takes place at Hoërskool Noordheuwel in Krugersdorp.

“The first two athletes in every event will go through to the provincial championships,” explains Smit. She says the athletes worked very hard and had excellent achievements under the club’s new training programme.

Kevin du Toit, a learner of Laerskool Dagbreek, broke the 100m record for boys U12 that has been standing for 42 years. He is expected to take part in the relay event and the 150m as well. Another club member, Mikayla Smit, a learner of Hoërskool Carletonville, smashed the 200m record for girls U17 that had been standing for 27 years. She also broke the 20-year-old 100m record.

Other club members taking part in the upcoming D2 Championships, who are learners of Laerskool Dagbreek, include Kevin de Beer (boys U12 relay), Ashleigh Kruger (girls U12 discus and 1 200m), Kay-Lee Ehrke (girls U13 relay), Hanroux Breytenbach (boys U13 javelin), Payten Slabbert (girls U13 75m-hurdles, 200m-hurdles, discus and relay), Rikus Nortje (boys U13 relay), and Tristen Erasmus (boys U12 shot put).
Meanwhile, Blessing Chimweuba, a learner of Laer Gedenkskool Danie Theron, will be taking part in the 1 500m and relay events for girls U13.

The club members from Hoërskool Carletonville who will be taking part in the D2 championship are Mikayla Smit (girls U17 100m, 200m, and high jump), Jutani Blaauw (girls U17 3 000m), and Tshepo Mogotsi (boys U19 100m and 200m).

Carleton Jones High School learners travelling to Krugersdorp include Remmone Morubi (boys U19 400m), Sibusiso Ndika (boys U17 100m and 200m), and Lesego Thelba (boys U17 long jump and 100m).
