Khutsong residents march peacefully against illegal immigration and foreign-owned businesses

About 50 residents marched through Khutsong on June 30, calling for stricter action against illegal immigrants, foreign-owned spaza shops, and landlords who accommodate undocumented foreigners.

Residents of Khutsong are currently marching peacefully in the only march against illegal foreigners in the area today (June 30).

The group of approximately 40 to 50 residents started at the taxi rank near the Khutsong police station and are marching on a route through Khutsong South and Khutsong. They are being accompanied by police and traffic officers.

According to the convener, Paseka Mthini, they want to see an end to foreign-owned spaza shops and informal traders in the area. They also want authorities such as the police and the Department of Home Affairs to start taking action against people who rent out their back rooms to illegal foreigners.

The organisers plan to go to the Department of Home Affairs in Oberholzer top raise their complaints on July 1. They also plan to go to businesses employing illegal foreigners on July 2.

“The government must start doing their work,” Mthini says.
