Merafong schools set to benefit from new cricket development programme
Meeting with Gauteng Lions Cricket Union aims to revive cricket in local schools while creating employment opportunities for community coaches.
A very important cricket development meeting took place on Monday, 22 June, at Hlangabeza Primary School, where Merafong schools and sports coordinators were invited. The purpose of the meeting was to develop a new cricket structure and obtain the endorsement of the Gauteng Lions Cricket Union for a programme that will be highly beneficial to local schools.
Cecilia Khumalo, a coach, umpire and advocate for cricket in local schools, was present to assist during the meeting.
The District Sports Coordinator, Mr Archie Danke, mentioned that it is the district’s wish to see learners in Merafong participating in cricket because it is the only area in the Gauteng district that is not active in the sport.
“We have partnered with the Gauteng Lions Cricket Union because the relationship has been long-standing,” he emphasised.
The union offered to provide cricket equipment and selected 11 members who will be given the opportunity to assist with facilitating cricket at local schools.
The coordinator concluded by stating that the employment opportunities were an added bonus for the day, showing that there is a reward for those who persevere.
