Damaged stormwater drains pose safety risk in Carletonville
Numerous damaged stormwater drain covers in Carletonville are creating safety hazards for motorists and pedestrians. Despite inquiries from the Herald, the Merafong City Local Municipality had not provided feedback on plans to repair the infrastructure by the time of printing.
The Merafong City Municipality has not released any plans on what to do with the many damaged storm water drain covers in Carletonville.
Over time some of the concrete blocks on top of the drains started to collapse. In some cases, especially in the CBD, this happened after trucks or other heavy vehicles drove over them repeatedly.
During the past five years especially, metal thieves have also started to steal the metal structures keeping the concrete blocks intact.
One of the most recent storm water drains to be damaged is the one at the corner of Talc Road and Dolomite Drive.
At this site, the concrete blocks lay into the side of the road and motorists are forced to drive with extra caution to avoid hitting them.
At other places, such as in the CBD, pedestrians can even trip or fall over the damaged drains.
Even though the Herald contacted the Merafong City Local Municipality about the matter on Monday, no feedback was received by printing time.
