SAMWU workers march on Merafong Municipality

They handed over a memorandum demanding accountability, a forensic audit, and answers from the municipality's leadership within 14 days.

Members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU), supported by COSATU and workers from other Gauteng municipalities, staged a protest in Carletonville on May 30 against the Merafong City Local Municipality.

Key grievances included alleged corruption, salary discrepancies, non-payment of wages, vacant critical positions, and misuse of contractors.

Workers also raised concerns about the lack of protective gear, unpaid benefits, and questionable legal expenses.

Protesters demanded that CoGTA launch a forensic investigation into municipal payments since January 2024 and that action be taken against Municipal Manager Dumisani Mabuza.

The memorandum was handed to Executive Mayor Nozuko Best, with a demand for response within 14 days.
