Brotherhood Junxion: Boys’ camp builds future leaders in the West Rand

The three-day event focused on emotional support, leadership, and life skills.

The Build-A-Life Foundation is taking bold steps to empower young boys across the West Rand through its dynamic three-day boys’ camp, Brotherhood Junxion. Held in Kagiso Township, the initiative brings together 150 male learners from high schools across Merafong, Rand West, and Mogale City, with support from the Merafong Municipality and the Gauteng West Education District.

The camp, which runs for three days, is part of the foundation’s larger mentorship programme aimed at helping boys in Grades 7 to 10 develop self-awareness, confidence, and purpose through structured support and guidance.

“I realised the boy child also needs attention. Many grow up angry, lacking guidance and emotional support,” said Lerato Monyela, founder of Build-A-Life Foundation. “These camps help them grow into responsible young men.”

Founded in Limpopo in 2023 and launched in Carletonville in September 2024, the foundation has already hosted successful boys’ camps in other regions, and its expansion into the West Rand marks a significant milestone.

A Camp that builds brotherhood

The Brotherhood Junxion programme includes a powerful blend of educational and personal development experiences. On Day 1, learners take part in a formal opening session, group workshops, and motivational presentations. Day 2 focuses on open, honest dialogue through a Boy’s Talk, covering real-life issues such as peer pressure, emotional wellbeing, and challenges in school and at home.

One of the key moments of the camp is a visit to a correctional services facility, where the boys engage in deep conversations with inmates about the consequences of poor choices and the importance of taking responsibility early in life.

Day 3 is a celebratory and fun-filled event that includes games, a Top 4 Brotherhood Junxion Tournament, and an awards ceremony to honour outstanding participation and growth.

Shaping young men for a stronger tomorrow

The Build-A-Life Foundation’s vision is to create communities where every person lives with dignity, feels safe, and is empowered with knowledge. Its mission is to build caring, resilient societies by providing mentorship, emotional support, and life skills—especially to those often overlooked.

“This camp isn’t just a once-off event; it’s a lifeline for many of these boys,” Monyela added. “We want them to see their worth, realise their potential, and go back into their communities as leaders.”
