Merafong’s Ranale Choenyana shines at defence programme but faces uncertain future

But delays in promised job placements have left graduates anxious about their future.

A Wedela resident, Ranale Choenyana (34), has flown Merafong’s flag high after excelling in a three-month character-building programme hosted at the Dunnottar Military Base.

The programme, led by the South African National Services Institute (SANSI) in partnership with the Department of Defence and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), attracted 583 participants from across the West Rand, including Krugersdorp, Randfontein, and three from Merafong.

Ranale stood out among hundreds of candidates, earning the prestigious Best Overall Student award for the entire West Rand region. His achievement placed him firmly among the top achievers in the intensive programme.

The initiative was designed not only to build character and discipline but also to open doors for permanent employment in the defence sector. Graduates were promised jobs after completing both the three-month training and an additional 12-month learnership.

However, those hopes are now clouded by uncertainty. Delays in the rollout have left many graduates in limbo, with some breadwinners having resigned from their jobs in anticipation of new opportunities.

Representatives have approached the office of the Minister of Defence, but officials have reportedly stated that the process is on hold due to funding challenges.

For Ranale and his fellow participants, the lack of communication is a serious concern. While they remain hopeful that the promised opportunities will materialise, many are anxious about their immediate future.
