Carletonville family still searching for missing mentally disabled man after three years

Police have reopened the case and urge anyone with information to come forward.

More than three years after his disappearance, the family of Frikkie Bester from Carletonville is still living in anguish, not knowing what became of him.

Bester, who is intellectually challenged and requires medical treatment, went missing on 28 July 2022 after leaving home on his bicycle. His family believes he may have been struggling with grief after the death of his mother. Despite numerous search efforts by relatives, community members, and authorities, all attempts to trace him have led to dead ends.

“He was vulnerable and did not know how to cope. If we could only know what happened to him… one hears so many things, even about human trafficking in the area,” his sister, Marietjie McIntyre, previously told the Herald.

The police initially closed the case in December 2022, but it was later reopened.

Frikkie, who is in his 50s, is short in build, about 1.68 metres tall, walks with a limp, and has dark eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he had dark brown, greying hair.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Sibusiso Lunga, on 083 733 2405.
