Protest causes chaos at N12 and R500 intersection due to Merafong Water Crisis

The problems are linked to Merafong municipality’s R1.4 billion debt to Rand Water.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the busy N12 and R500 intersection near Fochville this morning (Tuesday, September 23) as a major protest has brought traffic to a standstill.

At least 70 protesters from Kokosi have blocked the intersection to demonstrate against severe water shortages affecting the town and broader Merafong City Local Municipality.

The ongoing water crisis stems from Rand Water significantly restricting supply due to the municipality owing over R1.4 billion. The protest reflects growing frustration among residents, many of whom have endured dry taps for weeks.

While local and provincial traffic authorities, along with the police, are on the scene, they have not yet managed to clear the protest or restore normal traffic flow.

Motorists traveling between Potchefstroom and Westonaria are advised to avoid the N12/R500 crossing and instead take the R501 through Carletonville as an alternative route.

It remains unclear when the protest will be resolved and traffic conditions restored.
