Pothole problems persist on Fochville’s Raathskraal and Station roads
The Gauteng Roads Department has yet to respond to concerns.
Motorists who drive on some of the smaller tarred roads in the Fochville area must be on the lookout for potholes.
The Herald reported in April that residents who often have to use the Raathskraal road near Fochville complained of the many deep and dangerous potholes on it. The Herald checked this road again on October 2. Although many of the potholes have been fixed, there are still so many that pose a danger to motorists. The sides of the tarred road surface are also crumbling away in places.
“We will certainly not use this road again,” passing motorists remarked to the Herald.
They, just like many others, were directed onto the Raathskraal road by their GPS when they searched for a fast road to the Vereeniging area. People who use this road at night will especially have trouble navigating the potholes.

Meanwhile, Station Road, which turns off from the R500 on the opposite side of the Raathskraal Road, is also still not safe. According to residents of farms in the area, a Fochville businessman recently sent out some of his employees to fix potholes on this road with cement. Although they filled most of the worst potholes, the area near the T-junction with the R54 is still in such a bad state that motorists have to drive on the side of the road to ensure that they do not damage their vehicles.
As both roads are provincial roads, the Herald took the issue to the manager of the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department’s Krugersdorp region, Bulelwa Thomas. She, unfortunately, had not responded by printing time.
