Welverdiend residents frustrated as ongoing low voltage damages appliances
Locals report voltage drops as low as 166V, leading to damaged appliances, higher electricity costs, and growing frustration.
Although residents of Welverdiend have electricity again after a prolonged outage earlier this year, their problems are far from over.
Several residents complained on social media about voltage problems during the past weeks.
“We have been struggling with low voltage for more than a year,” says one of the affected residents, Jean du Plessis of Station Street.
According to qualified electricians, the normal and safe standard nominal voltage for household electrical power is between 230 to 240 Volts.
In Welverdiend, however, the voltage sometimes drops to as low as 166 Volts.
On November 18, the voltage dropped to between 180 and 200 Volts.
“This has now blown my fourth big television set,” Du Plessis complained.
Other residents have also lost various electrical equipment due to the ongoing problems.
The residents also complain that, as the low voltage is linked to high amperage, they technically use more electricity, for which they have to pay more.
The residents blame the problems on issues at the town’s Frikkie van der Merwe electrical substation.
“Everything usually goes well until the municipality starts working there,” another resident complained.
Although the Herald took the issues to the municipality on Monday, no feedback was received.
