Growing sinkhole in Khutsong South ignored

The Merafong City Local Municipality has taken no action, and officials have not responded to queries about the growing hazard.

The Merafong City Local Municipality appears to be ignoring a growing sinkhole in Khutsong South.

A concerned resident, Mzwandile Kheswa, notified the Herald about the growing sinkhole in March. The sinkhole developed on the last street of Khutsong South, to the side of Welver-diend, after a section of the gravel road started to wash away.

As this cavity was only metres away from the main tarred road between Khutsong and Welverdiend, residents fear the road could collapse if the sinkhole expands further.

Although residents have filled the part of the cavity closest to this tar road with rubbish, an-other section of the hole next to the fence separating Khutsong South from a large storm-water canal continued to cave in. A deep hole has now developed, extending underneath the fence.

Recent rain in the area has worsened the problem.

The municipality initially indicated that it would investigate whether the hole was indeed a sinkhole.

Despite the deterioration, they still have not done anything about the problem, and their marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, has also not responded to questions about the matter.
