JMPD warns motorists and visitors against drinking and driving ahead of new year

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department has issued a stern warning to motorists who are in Johannesburg for New Year celebrations, urging them not to drink and drive as enforcement operations intensify.

Merafong residents planning to travel to Johannesburg to celebrate the New Year have been urged to ensure they do not drink and drive, as law enforcement operations intensify during the most critical period of the festive season.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed that officers have ramped up high-visibility law enforcement efforts to curb reckless and dangerous behaviour on the roads, particularly driving under the influence of alcohol, as the 2025 festive season reaches its peak.

Between December 22 and December 28, JMPD officers conducted extensive roadblocks, roving patrols and targeted operations across all regions of Johannesburg. These actions form part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing road fatalities and ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors during the holiday period.

As a result of these intensified operations, 174 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Commenting on the arrests, JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca issued a strong warning to motorists who continue to disregard traffic laws.

“Every single arrest we make is more than just a statistic. It represents a potential tragedy averted and a life saved from the hands of a reckless driver,” Jaca said.

Under its zero-tolerance approach, the JMPD has confirmed that officers will maintain a 24-hour presence on major routes and identified hotspot areas throughout the festive season. Motorists are urged to take personal responsibility for their own safety and that of other road users.

The JMPD has advised motorists to plan ahead by designating a sober driver before heading out, making use of e-hailing services or public transport when consuming alcohol, and obeying all rules of the road.

The department’s message remains clear: motorists who choose to drink and drive will be arrested.
