Minor traffic accident leads to illegal mining bust in Carletonville

What began as a routine motor vehicle accident in Carletonville turned into a major law enforcement success when a fleeing driver was apprehended with nearly R800 000 in cash.

What seemed to be a regular accident turned into a police success in Carletonville just before Christmas.

According to a trustworthy source, a man was driving his red Range Rover in Dolomite Street on December 23. He skipped the stop street at Reinecke Street at approximately 13:30 and drove in front of another vehicle, which bumped into him.

The Range Rover’s driver immediately jumped out of his damaged SUV, grabbed a carry bag, and started to run from the accident scene.

Alert security officers of Gladiator Community Protection saw him running away, which is illegal as a driver may not leave the scene of an accident without giving their particulars, and chased after him.
They managed to take the driver down and hand him over to the police.

Once police searched his carry bag, they found cash just short of R800 000 inside.

When they pressed the man on where he got the money, he confessed to being involved in illegal mining in the area.

The man, a 32-year-old Lesotho national who was legally in the country, was arrested for alleged money laundering.

The case has since been taken over by the Hawks.
