Khutsong sewage leak still unresolved a month after sinkhole incident

A sewage leak in Khutsong remains unattended more than a month after a sinkhole nearly swallowed two taxis near the old Teacher’s Quarters.

A sewage leak in Khutsong remains unfixed more than a month after a sinkhole nearly swallowed two taxis at the same spot.

A hole caved in on December 3 where a municipal contractor left a ditch open near the old Teacher’s Quarters at Khayalethu.

The sinkhole damaged the front garden of Dorah Motladile (72). Although the council filled the hole before Christmas, local problems continue.

By January 12, the broken pipe that caused the sinkhole was still open, with continuous sewage leaking from it.

Neighbours say the front of Motladile’s yard is also starting to dip and needs more gravel to fill it up. A second, older sinkhole, just 10m away, has never been filled by the municipality. This hole has only been cordoned off with yellow barricades, even though it is several metres deep.

To make matters worse, people from the area have started throwing rubbish into it, which adds to the health risk caused by the leaking sewage.

The municipality was asked for a comment on Monday, but has not yet responded.
