Residents raise alarm over crime at Carletonville Civic Centre
Concerned residents are calling for urgent intervention to address crime and public drinking at the Carletonville Civic Centre.
Crime is currently one of the biggest concerns for Carletonville residents who live close to the Carletonville Civic Centre or who want to visit it.
A concerned resident, Shaleen Smith, has organised a golf day at Goldfields West Golf Club for February 27 to raise funds to improve conditions at the Civic Centre.
Smith, who is part of the We Love Carletonville initiative, previously told the Herald that although the park at the Civic Centre used to be a place where families could relax, they avoid it now because unsavoury characters such as drug users and drunk people often hang out there.
Another resident, Eugene Potgieter, also wrote a letter to the Acting Station Commander of the Carletonville Police Station about the matter this week. He sent accompanying photographs of people drinking in public, empty alcohol bottles and drug paraphernalia such as syringes lying in the park.
He asked for urgent intervention from the police to restore law and order especially in the Carletonville CBD.
“We are duly aware of the current workload our police officers have due to the reactive policing required on serious offences in our area. We would, however, like to request that the ‘less serious’ type offences in our area no longer be ignored, as the effective address of lesser serious offences will reduce other, and even life-threatening offences,” Potgieter said.
