Motorists warned about dangerous potholes on key roads near Fochville
Motorists travelling between Fochville, Potchefstroom and the Vaal area are urged to drive carefully as deep potholes and badly damaged tar sections on Station Road and Raathskraal Road pose a serious risk to vehicles.
Residents from the Fochville area who want to travel to Potchefstroom or the Vaal area have to be very careful not to damage their vehicles on some of the roads.
Since December, the conditions on Station Road, which joins the R500 with the R54 between Potchefstroom and Vereeniging, have deteriorated rapidly.
Dangerous potholes have again started to appear on the road next to BME, while there are several deep potholes scattered along the rest of the road. Motorists must be especially careful as some of these potholes are situated on bends or blind heights where it is not safe to swerve.
Because of this, it is advisable to drive at a speed at which you can brake safely.

The worst section of this road when you travel from Fochville is, however, the last kilometer before you reach the R54. What is left of the tarred road is in such a bad state that normal vehicles can only drive at a snail’s pace. So many motorists have been forced to drive on the side of the road.

Meanwhile, the Raathskraal Road, which also turns off the R500 and later joins the R553 at Sebokeng, is also in a very bad state.
Although this used to be a popular, quiet road to get to the Vaal area, it is now littered with potholes.
Many of these are also on blind heights, and there are few places where drivers can pull off on the side of the road.
The Herald took the problems to Bulelwa Thomas, Regional Manager at the Department of Roads and Transport. She referred the matter to a colleague, Simphiwe Hlatshwayo, who did not give feedback by printing time.
