Flooded Wedela junction poses danger to motorists during rain

Potholes hidden under water at Hlobo Street and 1st Avenue raise safety concerns.

Residents and visitors in Wedela are being urged to take extreme care when driving in the rain. A major route into townn as well as the route used to reach the clinic and municipal offices, has become a serious hazard for motorists.

The trouble spot is at the T-junction of Hlobo Street and 1st Avenue. Because Hlobo Street sits on a steep slope, rainwater rushes down the hill and collects at the bottom.

During heavy downpours, the water at this junction often dams up higher than the bottom of car doors.

and hides deep, dangerous potholes beneath the surface.

While the Merafong City Local Municipality has fixed some of these holes over the years, many potholes remain and motorists can still easily damage their vehicles if they hit a pothole hidden under the water.
The Herald reached out to Temba Fezani, the municipality’s marketing and communications manager, on Monday to ask about plans for the road.

At the time of going to press, no response had been received.
