Hoërskool Fochville pupil recovering at home after serious rugby injury

Grade 8 learner faces uncertain recovery as family raises concerns over follow-up care

A Grade 8 pupil from Hoërskool Fochville is back home following a serious injury during a rugby tour, though his family says he still faces a difficult recovery.
Xander van Niekerk was injured on March 28 while playing a match in White River during the Danie Rossouw rugby tour. He underwent surgery at Rob Ferreira Hospital in Mbombela, where doctors used a plate and six screws to stabilise his spine.
Xander’s grandmother, René Gous, confirmed he arrived in Fochville late on April 4. While he is happy to be home, the road ahead remains uncertain.
“He is full of smiles to be back home, but is very tired and wants to sleep often,” his grandmother said.
The family has raised concerns regarding his follow-up care. Xander was reportedly released from the hospital without clear instructions on when to begin physiotherapy or when he would be able to sit up.
Currently, the teenager relies on strong pain medication, particularly when showering, which leaves him exhausted. To manage his recovery, he is also following a special diet.
The family is using funds raised through a BackaBuddy page to seek further medical advice. They have scheduled an appointment with a neurosurgeon for
8 April, where they expect Xander to undergo further X-rays and a CT scan.
In addition to medical bills, the family has had to cover significant travel costs and toll fees for the trips to and from Mbombela. They wish to thank everyone who has supported them during this time.
