Cable theft plunges Khutsong residents into darkness

Community urged to act as repeated power outages hit Rest In Peace area near clinic

Cable thieves are making the lives of residents of Rest In Peace in Khutsong miserable.

According to one of the residents, Prince Molepo, the electricity supply to the area near the Khutsong West Clinic went off at approximately 22:00 on April 15.

People in the area soon discovered that the supply was disrupted when cable thieves struck several electricity boxes, where they cut off cables.

“Surprisingly enough, many members of the community know the names of the people who stole the cables, but they are reluctant to report this matter to the SAPS,” says Molepo. “The community has an ‘I don’t care’ attitude, and thinks that it is Eskom’s responsibility to sort the problem out. We need to stand up as a combined community and help Eskom to prevent vandalism and get people to buy electricity,” he added.

Molepo also called on Eskom to start locking all electricity boxes, or to have the boxes installed in the yards of residents with proper fencing to keep them safe.

The Herald contacted Eskom about the issues, but received no reply by printing time.
