Youth Day game day and documentary screening aims to inspire positive change in Kokosi

A Youth Day commemoration event in Kokosi Township will combine documentary screenings, sports activities, and discussions on social issues to encourage positive youth engagement and combat substance abuse.

Organisers hope the event will revive sporting and cultural activities while creating awareness of challenges facing the local community.

A special Youth Day celebration will take place in Extension 1, Kokosi, on Sunday, June 14, at Tirisano Sunset Car Wash from 12:00 to 20:00.

The event, a Youth Day Commemoration Game Day, will feature the screening of two documentaries produced by a local production company known as Ext Lab. The first documentary, titled “Ematyotyombeni,” focuses on the hardships currently facing residents of Section 99 in the township, with the hope that awareness of these challenges may lead to assistance and intervention. The second documentary is titled “Water Saga.”

The event promises to be fun-filled, with chess games and basketball activities taking place throughout the day.

According to the organisers, the aim of the event is to revive a culture of positive activities in the township, as organised sporting codes have largely disappeared and many young people are becoming involved in substance abuse.

“This is mainly to remind the young ones that there’s more out there that can keep us away from drugs and bad influences,” expressed Mika Earl.

There will also be discussions on social ills and ideas on how young people can help combat these challenges within their community.

The event is a continuation of a movement that has already gained momentum in the township, known as “Hip Hop Sundays.” During these gatherings, positive-minded young people come together to socialise and enjoy hip-hop music. The initiative revives the hip-hop sessions that were once regularly held in the township and served as a way to unite people while keeping young people away from negative influences through art and self-expression.
