Our Town Fochville transforms community with pothole repairs and town improvement projects

Volunteer-driven organisation fixes roads, paints speed humps and plans major upgrades to parks, sports facilities and traffic infrastructure.

A non-political community organisation in Fochville is making a visible difference in the town.

In just more than two years after Our Town Fochville was started as a co-operative in March 2024, the organisation is making a huge difference in Fochville.

Residents who drove through Fochville during the past weeks would have seen Ferdi Lensley and his team fixing potholes all over the town.

During the current run that started about three weeks ago they have fixed potholes in Poortjie, Gars, Lucerne, Vrede, Kerk, 1st, 5th, 7th, and 8th Street.

The team cleans out the potholes before sealing them with a special filling. It is only after this that each pothole is filled with tar and compacted.

Because of this thorough process, the potholes that were filled last April have still not reopened. It costs about R200, including labour, to fix each pothole.

According to Jan Schoonraad, who heads Our Town Fochville’s leadership, the organisation currently has 28 members, which have grown from only eight last year.

According to the organisation’s constitution, all members must come from Fochville, Kokosi, or Greenspark.

The organisation is also busy painting the 99 speed humps in the area, and plans to start fixing traffic signs at bigger intersections soon.

Our Town Fochville also plans to upgrade the Piet Viljoen Park as well as the Greenspark sports grounds, together with the Merafong City Local Municipality and Master Drilling.

They also plan to tackle the Fochville waste transfer station sometime in the future.

As all Our Town Fochville’s work is done with money obtained from members, Schoonraad invites more residents to join. Residents of the Fochville area who want to become members can contact him on 082 853 0613.
