Former Hoërskool Fochville learner reaches finals of International Sony Film Awards

Talita Brits represents South Africa in Los Angeles after her short film Ongeluk is selected among the world's top student productions.

A former learner of Hoërskool Fochville, Talita Brits, has recently travelled to Los Angeles in the United States after being selected as a finalist in a prestigious international film competition.

The 24-year-old visited California from June 6 to June 12 for the 2026 Sony Future Filmmaker Awards, a major annual short film programme dedicated to supporting and elevating independent creators from across the globe.

The awards offer a unique prize, providing successful filmmakers with an invaluable trip to Los Angeles and the historic Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City. There, participants gain exclusive access to industry experts and unparalleled insight into Hollywood. Winners also receive cash prizes and a range of Sony digital imaging equipment.

Talita’s short film, titled Ongeluk, which translates to Accident, was chosen as one of the top entries in the student category. She explained that the film originally started as a university project. It tells the emotional story of Melanie, a young woman involved in a car accident who must learn to live with her guilt, loss, and the consequences of her decisions.

Speaking to the Herald from Los Angeles, Talita described it as an incredible privilege to represent South Africa on the world stage.

“There are amazingly talented filmmakers from all over the world. Getting to know them and networking with them has been an incredible experience. Over the past few days, we have attended workshops and participated in discussions with directors, producers, editors, and other industry professionals. It is eye-opening to receive information and advice from people who are already established in the industry,” she said. “I am so grateful for the support I have received from my parents, my family, and my country. I cannot express how many people are simply happy for me that this opportunity has come my way.”

The awards ceremony took place in Los Angeles on 11 June.

Although Talita achieved great success by reaching the finals, the student category was ultimately won by Ana A. Alpizar from Cuba with her film Norheimsund.
